چکیده

Stuttering, with its characteristic disruption in verbal fl uency, has been known for centuries; earliest descriptions probably date back to the Biblical Moses’ “slowness of speech and tongue” and his related avoidance behavior (Exodus 4, 10–13). Stuttering occurs in all cultures and ethnic groups (Andrews et al. 1983; Zimmermann et al. 1983), although prevalence might differ. Insofar as many of the steps in how we produce language normally are still a mystery, disorders like stuttering are even more poorly understood. However, genetic and neurobiological approaches are now giving us clues to causes and better treatments.

In a sense, what he said of stuttering might also be said of such other perplexing fo...

Effects of perceived causality on perceptions of persons who stutter.

UNLABELLED This study examined the effects of the perceived cause of stuttering on perceptions of persons who stutter (PWS) using a 7-item social distance scale, a 25-item adjective pair scale and a 2-item visual analogue scale. Two hundred and four university students rated vignettes which varied on describing a PWS with different causalities for stuttering (psychological, genetic, or unknown)...

Stuttering: a dynamic motor control disorder.

UNLABELLED The purpose of this review is to determine what neural mechanisms may be dysfunctional in stuttering. Three sources of evidence are reviewed. First, studies of dynamic inter-relationships among brain regions during normal speech and in persons who stutter (PWS) suggest that the timing of neural activity in different regions may be abnormal in PWS. Second, the brain lesions associated...
